The Best Laid Plans Often Go Awry

We generally like to start our circuit by walking to this pristine beach at the end of our street, where the azure waves crash against the rugged shore and we can pretend for a few moments that we’re about to lounge luxuriously on the golden sand, not haul our bodies up and down a steep hill for 5 miles., Marguerite Island, where we were to have a walking tour of the town and museum, and would then be given the rest of the afternoon to go rock-jumping and snorkeling at the island’s gorgeous beaches., “I obviously don’t know you at all, but I overheard your conversation as you were walking over here and I did an international study program over the summer and have been in a similar situation.

My Best of Florence

I grew up in Los Angeles, a very touristy area, and my favorite places in LA you will not find in any travel guide., La Beppa Fioraia is one of my favorite restaurants because here I feel like I have escaped the busy city and tourism that accompanies it., Walking through this area I feel like I am in the hills of Chianti, miles outside Florence., Some more of my favorites include walking along the Arno river, exploring the Oltrarno, and standing in the ever-popular Piazza Vecchio or in front of the overwhelming Duomo.

My Favorite Place in Granada: the Alhambra

Walking into the Alhambra site is an experience itself., Our CEA group had to weave past hundreds of tourists, who were waiting to buy tickets or to enter the sites., After the CEA group reached the viewpoint, by taking the bus and and then walking the steep hills of the Albayzín, I was simply speechless., I could even see tourists, as tiny dots, on top of the fortress., The tourists snap away on their cameras, trying to get perfect pictures from the lookout point.

An Abridged Guide to Alternative Rome: Some of My Personal Favorites

The city of Rome has no shortage of tourist attractions., The great thing for study abroad students and tourists is that many of the bars in Campo dei Fiori, notably the Drunken Ship, cater to foreigners which means you will always be able to find the drinks and music you're looking for., Where in ancient times, it was one of the most important and strategically placed Roman roads, today, it is the main walking path for those wanting to visit any (or all) of the numerous ruins left behind as a result of its historical significance., One of my favorite places to stop along this road is the Caffarella Valley, one of the few places within walking distance of the city where you can still find natural forest and wide, grassy meadows., Mirko Bar: This little cafe is probably going to be the hardest for any regular tourist to find but for students at the CEA Global Campus is Rome, it's just around the corner.

This CEA Excursion Morocc'ed My World

One ferry ride and two bus rides later, I found myself in Tétuoan, Morocco where we met our tour guide for the next two days, Abdul, who also went by George [Clooney] because of his self-proclaimed stark resemblance to the celebrity., Upon arriving to the city, Abdul gave us a tour around the bus and then off the bus where we walked through a local school., If just walking around the city and talking to these students weren’t already a culture shock, so was eating the food since my group and I ate it “wrong.”, There, we rode camels, got a bus tour, and visited its Medina to shop around., While we had to say good-bye to Abdul, we got a new tour guide who took us around the city and gave us free time to shop and take pictures afterwards—an opportune time to find ourselves an Insta-worthy picture (priorities).

What Does Culture Immersion Mean?

The waiter turns to face you and flashes you a look: the tourist smirk., You've been made, and your forehead may as well read É TRANGERE because, as you've just found out the hard way, coffees with cream or milk are only one of two things: breakfast drinks or tourist red flags., This led to an unfortunate moment that resembled that dance that people walking opposite ways do to avoid crashing into one another in the street, except so much worse.
